The romance of the sea.
The stillness of the bush.
The magic of Mornington Peninsula.
Salt-scented air; bright stars in an ink-black sky; an emerald tangle of trees; the whisper of waves. Welcome to Big Blue Backyard – creative luxury
The perfect accommodation for romancing, reconnecting, relaxing that's just an hour’s drive from Melbourne, but a world away from city life.
Big Blue Backyard is a secluded, romantic retreat designed with couples in mind.
Come here to relax and reconnect.
Come here for good food, for a special occasion.
Come here to hide away.
Come here to discover the Peninsula.
Come here to forget yourself.
Come here to find yourself, and each other (in a big bed, in a star-spying spa bath, on deserted St Andrews Beach, over chef-cooked breakfasts, delicious dinners and wonderful local wine).
Come here to do anything you like or nothing at all.
Choose from three individual, boutique beachside hideaways, all just minutes from the sand. Instead of a hotel room, picture a private cabin, hidden amid tea trees. Expect to be spoiled with wine and food and films and music and the crisp cotton linen.
[Imagine a sexy lightfilled bathroom stocked with luxurious Olie & Olive bath products. Imagine a big bed, topped with plump cushions and soft fabrics. Imagine a mini-fridge stocked with Australian beers and wines. Imagine a bag of just-baked biscuits, proper coffee, and books to borrow.]
Bed down by the beach and bush at this romantic eco-friendly retreat, built by hand using local materials. This is a labour of love. This is creative luxury.

I stayed at The Big Blue Back Yard in St Andrews Beach, a boutique B&B with three individually-designed private cottages right by the beach. Larger resorts have their place but also a routine and all too often I’ve found you become a hostage to the experience.
Not so here; the B&B offers the best kip and tucker in the region. The fridge in the room has space enough to store a magnum and the cracked heel balm in the bathroom was a fragrant touch for the weary traveller.
With a twinkle in her eye, my South African hostess said she’d only be too happy to apply it at the risk of embarrassing me.
There's a reason The Big Blue Backyard is on Paradise Drive. I would head back there in a heartbeat.
Cheers! Richard enjoys a glass of wine
